Beating BPA

Bisophenol A, or BPA, is a compound found in many types of plastics that has proven to be particularly problematic. Thanks to the power of science and social media, BPA has definitely been the topic of many conversations regarding health, fertility, and babies…and rightfully so. According to an extensive literary review from 2013, conducted by Johanna R. Rochester, this endocrine disruptor has been linked to suppressing testosterone and estrogen production. These are two critical hormones in both men and women that are needed to promote fertility. Rochester also notes that exposure to BPA may be linked to reduced sperm quality, reduced sexual function, miscarriages, low birthweight, and childhood neurological development. BPA is so significant, that the FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) has actually banned the use of BPA in all bottles and sippy cups for babies. While this is a fantastic advancement, buying “BPA-free” plastic products may not be enough. There is new research being done on BPA alternative plastics, such as BPS and BPF that are proving to potentially be even worse than BPA. Reducing our plastic consumption is not only good for our health, but good for our environment as well! We encourage our mammas to focus on products that contain mainly glass, stainless steel, or ceramic materials whenever possible. We found some great ones for you to try!

Easy Ways to Reduce BPA:

1. BPA Free Baby Bottles and Sippy Cups: It is best to look for the bottles and sippy cups that have the least amount of plastic possible. These ones are made from stainless steel or glass. There are so many adorable ones out there!

2. Containers: Foods storage is a lifesaver, and allows busy parents to make sure they can grab leftovers and keep food fresh, but it is especially important to make sure that the vessels in which you are storing your food are glass, ceramic or stainless steel. When plastic is heated, such as when there is hot food put into it, or when it is put through the dishwasher, or left in the sun, it allows for the BPA to seep into whatever food may be in it. This increases your exposure and may lead to some unwanted issues. We particularly love the glass containers with the chic bamboo lids! Take a look below!

3. Pots and Pans: There are so many options out there for pots and pans, and sometimes it is hard to know which ones are the best. Aim for aluminum free, stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic cookware. Tip: The most expensive ones are not always the healthiest! Check out the ones below that will look great in your kitchen and be great for you!

4. Water Bottles: Say goodbye to plastic water bottles! Switching to reusable, stainless steel or glass water bottles is not only good for the environment, but is good for your health and the health of your baby. This one is especially important since many Mammas use water bottles on a daily basis. This is one simple step that can reduce so much exposure to BPA and other plastics, plus is is better for the environment. We found some gorgeous water bottles that will not only keep you hydrated in a healthy way, but will keep up with that cute Cha Cha vibe.

5. BPA Free Canned Goods: We recognize the convenience of canned beans, fruits, and soups, and we totally understand that some days, canned beans are just as good as it’s going to get! That being said, searching for cans that are BPA free, or simply avoiding cans and opting for dried beans and fresh fruit instead, would be a great way to reduce your BPA intake!
